Watch Kurt Vile Cover John Prine’s “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness” on Seth Meyers

Kurt Vile stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers on Thanksgiving evening to perform his cover of “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness” by John Prine. Watch the full performance below.

Instead of doing the traditional introduction to segue into Vile’s performance, Meyers actually told a brief, personal story before passing the microphone over to the musician. “My family loved John Prine and we booked this act because we thought it would be a perfect song to listen to together on that couch,” he said. “Now we can’t be together, and it was unplanned, but this is a perfect song for anyone who’s not with their loved ones this year.”

Vile’s rendition of the song is a faithful, yet emotional, spin on Prine’s original version. Basked in the soft glow of an overhead light, Vile takes his time fingerpicking his way through the track, letting his voice curl around each vocal slide with the slightly pitchy delivery he’s known for — and the result of which makes for a rather tender cover of “Speed of the Sound of Loneliness”.

It was fitting for Vile to cover Prine on Thanksgiving because he’s a vocal, longtime fan. Not only did the two play together years before Prine passed away due to COVID-19, but Vile has also covered him numerous times and released a new EP, Speed, Sound, Lonely KV, which features a duet with Prine.

New Rapid COVID-19 Testing Kits Gives Hope for Return of Live Events

Rapid coronavirus (COVID-19) testing kits are hitting the market and they could change the way people test at home or before going out to public spaces, including concert venues.

Swallow Events is behind a new kit specially designed for the live events industry. This is first company to offer its rapid testing service to organizers in the UK and across the world. The process involves 15-minute “pop up” testing (99.68% specificity) done by government-approved healthcare professionals.

With the ability to test for COVID-19 on site, with results in just minutes, comes the possibility of large-scale events returning once again. The major turn-off for smaller events being cost, as testing kits start at £13 a pop with a minimum 100 units.

Founder and Managing Director of Swallow Events, Oli Thomas, calls the testing kit a “game changer.”

His full statement reads:

The events industry has been forgotten and devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although a common misconception, events have actually been allowed to take place in the UK in 2020. The guidelines regarding them, however, are unclear, with the ultimate decision often based on a single person’s opinion at local authority level.

There are instances of events receiving approval and licences granted, only for them then to be revoked at the last minute, which only serves to further fuel financial problems and job losses to the industry. With this in mind we are very proud to announce we are the first events company in the UK to offer an on-site rapid testing service for COVID-19 in as little as 15 minutes, which, we believe, is a complete game changer.

Swallow Events also offers consulting services for enabling events in various sectors in line with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). More info here.

Dua Lipa’s Studio 2054 Livestream: Here’s What Happened

Dua Lipa hosted a star-studded livestream event tonight (November 27) called Studio 2054. Performing live from a warehouse, she was joined by Elton John, FKA twigs, Bad Bunny, Miley Cyrus, Kylie Minogue, and other guests during the show. Check out the Studio 2054 setlist below.

Dancers surrounded Dua Lipa from opening number “Future Nostalgia” until FKA twigs appeared solo, starting a new song that she and Dua Lipa have recorded but not yet officially released. After the club-style dance party with the Blessed Madonna through “Boys Will Be Boys,” roller skaters circled Dua Lipa while she sang “Cool.” She left the club floor to perform “New Rules,” which yielded to a video clip of her performing “Prisoner” with Miley Cyrus. She returned to the mic for “Un Día (One Day),” with J Balvin and Bad Bunny contributing their verses from footage on a TV set.

Belgian singer Angèle joined her live for “Fever,” and after another club stretch that included “One Kiss” and a duet with Kylie Minogue on “Real Groove,” Elton John appeared as a looming projection, performing “Rocket Man.” She closed out the show with “Don’t Start Now” amid a glitter explosion.

Dua Lipa released Club Future Nostalgia, a Blessed Madonna remix of her March album Future Nostalgia, at the end of August. Earlier this week, Future Nostalgia was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album Grammys, with “Don’t Start Now” also earning nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance. “Un Día (One Day),” Dua Lipa’s collaboration with J Balvin, Bad Bunny, and Tainy, was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.

Since releasing Future Nostalgia, Dua Lipa has more recently joined Miley Cyrus on her Plastic Hearts single “Prisoner.” After performing “Levitating” at the American Music Awards at the end of November, she’ll be the musical guest on Saturday Night Live on December 19 with host Kristen Wiig.

Michael Bublé Is “Absolutely Loving” Deftones’ New Album Ohms

Canadian singer Michael Bublé is best known as a velvet-voiced crooner, but that doesn’t stop him from listening to some metal in his downtime. Apparently, he’s a huge fan of Deftones and their new album, Ohms.

The singer posted an Instagram story where he’s literally jumping for joy after receiving a care package of swag from Deftones. “Thank you @deftones for the swag!” he posted, while tagging each member of the band. “I am absolutely loving the new record Ohms!”

Bublé had previously sang the praises of Deftones’ 2016 album, Gore, tweeting at the time: “A big congrats to my buds @deftones on making an incredible record !!!”

It begs the question: What would a Bublé-Deftones collaboration sound like? It’s unlikely the singer will be dabbling in heavy metal anytime soon, but you never know. If David Hasselhoff can do it, then why not?

Lately, we’ve been finding metalheads in unlikely places. Rihanna recently appeared wearing a vintage Pantera T-shirt and sporting a sweet mullet, while Miley Cyrus is recording a full album of Metallica covers.

Check out a screenshot of Bublé’s story and his 2016 Deftones tweet below (via Metal Injection). Pick up a copy of Ohms here.

21 Savage’s Brother Stabbed to Death

21 Savage’s brother was killed in London.

Terrell Davis, a 27-year-old drill rapper known as TM1way, was stabbed to death following an argument with a friend in the South London neighborhood of Brixton on Sunday night (Nov. 22), according to the Daily Mail.

Savage confirmed the tragic news on Instagram, sharing a heartfelt tribute to his little brother. “Can’t believe somebody took you baby bro I know I took my anger out on you I wish I could take that shit back,” he wrote alongside a childhood photo of him and Terrell.

Terrell and Savage’s sister, Kyra Davis, was also heartbroken over the loss. “I don’t even know what to say. My heart is in pieces. I love you more than words can say. Rest in perfect peace Terrell,” she wrote.

A family source said that Terrell was shopping for his elderly grandmother during the pandemic when he bumped into an old friend. The two reportedly got into an argument before the man suddenly lunged forward and stabbed him.

“He was coming back to the house when he saw an old friend. This was someone he’d known for a long time,” said the source. “They started arguing over something and then suddenly he stabbed him. It was completely out of the blue.”

The source added, “Terrell didn’t have any enemies that I knew of and he wasn’t involved with any gangs. He just focused on his music.”

Police arrived at the scene where he was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made.

Terrell and 21 Savage both grew up in Newham, East London, and have the same father, Kevin Emmons. Savage, born She’yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was brought to the United States by his mother when he was 7 years old.
